Science in Images: 17-year Periodical Cicada in Flight

Magicicada sp. photographed in Eastern Iowa, USA during a trip to see the emergence of the 17-year periodical cicada brood XIII. The photograph captures it flying from one branch to another. The striped tymbals, the organs it uses to produce its loud calls, are visible on its upper back.

About the photographer: Roberta D’Camp (she/her) is a biology master’s student at the University of Montréal currently focusing on a project using plants to remediate water pollution. She is an enthusiastic photographer of animals, such as insects and birds, and has lived and worked in swamps, deserts, forests, and plains all across the US.
